NAMAZ
Experimental audio-visual installation

The work narrates the story of suffering of an 80 year old man from Ajmeri badi, who I interviewd as a part of the course study. The audio being played is the recorded interview which narrates the story of his life in Sarkhej Roza. It correlates with the visuals. The old man, running a grocery shop, talks deeply about his degrading health and expresses a feeling of emptiness and missing NAMAZ, which is an important part of their life.

The suspended cloth takes the posture of a person offering Namaz, and represents absence and faint physical presence. Visuals are projected on the water which are blurred and represents forgotten memories and uneasiness he feels.

The work titled “NAMAZ” explores how such pain and suffering is resisted, remembered and recorded and moves beyond the realm of suffering into a space of quiet contemplation, where resilience creates the potential for transformation.

A story is narrated through visuals that are projected on a narrow brass vessel filled with water. Audio of the prayer is also played simoulatenously.
